You may question how it all started... Well, this is how is starts:
"We will save lives! said Kay Howe and Students"
This is a unbearable and possibly a deadly illness that is spreading worry throughout the Hawaii Islands. The state's well being is being threatened. There has been talk that this illness has increased over time. When visting a local doctor, Dr. Dykama from Keaau Bay Clinic, he stated, "This is a real concern for Hawaii residents because people are not really educated about rat lung". That is why more sites like this one should be promoted throughout the Hawaiian Islands.
'Rat lung' or angiostrongylus, is a parasite that can only be carried by rats. It is then migrated directly to humans by slugs or flatworms. Specialists suspect this happens when the individual consumes contaminated produce. But humans are not the only ones who can be infected by rat lung. Animals like dogs and horses can get it too. The parasite travels by using the bloodstream. It will eventually make it's way to the brain and will trigger devastating health issues. Early detection is important, but the diagnosis may be complex. The symptoms are so broad that many doctors may miss the illness altogether. Many people will be sent home thinking they have the flu, yet have rat lung. However, it is preventable. The key is to wash all fruits and vegetables well before consumption.
